Stories of courage, stories of hope, stories that embody the American Spirit. Made in America is made up of three stories that will take audiences on a journey through time and across our nation with inspiring stories of courageous American youth. As part of the Leaping for Literacy project, this production is inspired by "The Dear America,” “American Girl,” and “My Name is America” book series'.
Made in America will be performed in three acts, and focus on three stories:
Alta California
The story of a Mestizo (a person of mixed Spanish and Native American blood)
orphan and her journey to find out where she belongs during the mid1800’s
in Alta California (before California joined the union and became a state).
Our ballet will focus on the main character’s search for her heritage,
knowing who she is, and her discovery of who she is related to. The book has
many other intriguing story lines that embrace American History; unfortunately,
they cannot all be covered in a ballet.

The California Diary of Maria Rosalia Milagros
Over-The-Rhine
Kit Kittredge is a youngster living in Over-The-Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio during
the Great Depression in the 1930’s. To make ends meet, her family opens
their home to boarders who have lost their homes because of the Depression.
Our ballet will focus on one of the families the Kittredge’s take in,
an Appalachian family leaving the coal mines of Hinton, West Virginia for a
better life and work in Cincinnati.
Inspired by the book: American Girl: Meet Kit.
Four Bases
The story of a young man who is the bat boy of a Negro Baseball League team
in the 1940’s. Our ballet will focus on the travels and activities of
the team and the struggles and journey of our main character.
Inspired by the book: My Name is America: The Journal of
Biddy Owens: The Negro Leagues, Birmingham, Alabama, 1948
