Rikki Tikki Tavi Synopsis & Narrator Script
ACT ONE – Coming to India
Good evening and welcome to the show Rikki Tikki Tavi! The original dance drama based on the story by Rudyard Kipling. Our story begins in colonial India. A boy named Teddy and his family travel to their new home by train and marvel at the villagers who dance on the tops of the train cars. The family’s house is set in a beautiful garden full of lovely animals. While the family is entranced by the great beauty of nature surrounding them, there are two animals who are not so pleased with the family’s arrival: the snakes. The father and mother snake, Nag and Nagaina, are threatened by the family living in what the snakes think is their home. The family, however, is unaware and welcomes their new home in a traditional Indian manner with the help of their housekeeper. The festivities begin as the villagers dance around the house warming ceremony. The busy day is ended by an evening of ballroom dancing when the family’s English friends come to dance with them.
ACT TWO – Meet Rikki Tikki Tavi
The almighty monsoon season has begun bringing great storms to India. The rain begins in the streets as village girls dance and play in the water. We move from the street outside the family’s house to the garden. The deer family moves slowly seeking shelter from the storm. Hidden between the bodies of the deer is a shivering mongoose choked with water. The miserable mongoose desperately crawls between the legs of the deer finding a safe haven from the floods that carried the helpless mongoose from his burrow. The picks up and the girls on the street are carried away by the strong wind in their umbrellas.
When the storm subsides, Teddy is curious to see how the garden animals are faring. The family goes on a walk and finds the poor mongoose in the garden. Teddy is immediately excited by his find and begs his parents to keep the mongoose as a pet. Mother does not want to bring a filthy animal into the home; but at Teddy’s insistence, father and mother finally agree to bring him home. Teddy plays with his new pet mongoose, Rikki Tikki Tavi, and they become fast friends. The snakes slither around the home planning their next attack and are shocked when they see the family’s pet mongoose. ‘We cannot get rid of the family with this mongoose protecting them!’ they thought to themselves for everyone knows it is a mongoose’s duty to fight snakes. And so the snakes leave to think about their new enemy.
Meanwhile, Teddy’s friends come over and the housekeeper teaches them Indian dancing. They are not won over at first, but by the end are true bhangra champs.
ACT THREE – Boys Will Be Boys & Let’s Play Cricket
The housekeeper gathers the boys together to exercise and practice in preparation for their big cricket match. The boys are excited to play but find it hard to practice in the hot, Indian weather and are sometimes distracted by the chasing the peacocks in the field. Finally, they are ready for their cricket match. The boys’ parents come to the big event and celebrate their great victory.
After the game, the boys are tired. The housekeeper tries to get the boys to play on their own with the rocking horse, but the boys refuse. Rikki Tikki Tavi’s antics set the boys in a good mood and they delight in their tomfoolery.
The boys go home and Teddy wants to take advantage of this evening’s strong winds. He and the housekeeper fly a kite in the warm summer air.
Afterwards, it is Teddy’s bedtime. He has had so much fun with his friends and beloved Rikki Tikki that he does not want to go to bed. He dances in happiness in his bedroom until the housekeeper finally puts him to bed with Rikki Tikki at his feet. The two sleep peacefully and unaware while the vengeful snakes enter the bedroom to get a closer look at their new enemy.
ACT FOUR – Teddy’s Birthday Party
It is a new day for Teddy and his family! The deer and parrots and peacocks joyfully dance in and out of the garden. The mood takes a turn when the snakes scare away the birds and make themselves a presence.
In the house, it is Teddy’s birthday party. All of his friends have come over to celebrate with him. Dancers surround the celebration and display the intricate and sensational rhythms of classical Indian dance.
Teddy and Rikki Tikki continue their celebration outside in the garden with the monkeys and peacocks.
ACT FIVE – Battle of Nag & Rikki Tikki Tavi
Teddy ends another great day and falls asleep with faithful Rikki Tikki Tavi beside him. Sheathed by the cloak of night, the snakes enter the bedroom again, but this time they attack! Rikki Tikki springs into action to protect his beloved Teddy. Rikki pins Nag to the floor but Teddy is still frightened for both Rikki’s and his own life. The housekeeper cleverly saves them all with her snake charming flute and the family whisks Nag away, never to be seen again.
ACT SIX – Battle of Nagina & Rikki Tikki Tavi
The next day, the family eats breakfast in the garden safe from the evils of Nag, but they do not yet know about his wife, Nagaina…Rikki Tikki Tavi plays with all the animals to Teddy’s delight. Suddenly, a bitter and angry Nagaina appears to seek revenge on the family. Rikki is quick to protect the whole family against the evil Nagaina and she is taken away forever by the housekeeper’s snake charming wile. And so, the valiant and noble Rikki Tikki Tavi saves Teddy and his family again and forever more. He kept that garden as a mongoose should, with tooth and jump and spring and bite, till a never a cobra dared show its head again.
